  • A concourse area at the Mall of America in Bloomington Minn. is seen

Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts told reporters Friday that police were called to the Mall of America at 10:17 a.m. local time, and initial information suggested a child had fallen from the third level of the mall's interior to the first level.

Police in Minnesota say they've arrested a 24-year-old man in an incident in which a child may have been pushed or thrown from a balcony at the Mall of America.

Police say that there is no apparent connection between the suspect and the victim or the victim's family. "Bloomington Police is investigating the incident", it said.

"She was screaming 'Everyone pray, everyone pray, '" shopper Brian Johnson told CBS. But three months later he was accused of returning and throwing a glass at a woman in a mall restaurant.

Aranda was chased and arrested Friday after the boy was thrown or pushed from a third-floor balcony and landed on the first floor at the mall.

"The child did suffer significant injuries", he said.

"This was a senseless act and words can not truly express our profound shock and sadness". But service was restored just before 11:30 a.m.

Aranda's criminal record includes two convictions in 2015 for obstruction of the legal process/interfering with a peace officer, as well as convictions for fifth-degree assault, trespassing and damage to property. Our immediate and only concern is for the well-being of the family and the child, as well as for any individuals who may have witnessed the incident.

The suspect, Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, who is from the area, was charged with attempted homicide, police said in a statement.

"We don't believe that there is a threat to the public at this point as the suspect has been located", he said, adding that the incident appeared to be isolated. We know that this is a concerning event for all of us.
