  • Assange claims he is going to be thrown out of the Embassy

At the moment, Assange is being held at a central London police station and will appear before the Westminster Magistrates' Court later today.

British police arrested Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday.

In a statement, Metropolitan Police confirmed the Wikileaks founder had been taken into custody.

Though that criminal investigation was dropped previous year, Assange, who is Australian, remained behind the embassy's walls out of concern that he could face extradition to the United States for leaking classified military and diplomatic documents through Wikileaks, with the help of former military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.

In June past year, Vice President Mike Pence pressured the Ecuadorian government on the status of Assange following demands from Senate Democrats that he do so.

"During the conspiracy, Manning and Assange engaged in real-time discussions regarding Manning's transmission of classified records to Assange", the DOJ said in a statement.

"The discourteous and aggressive behaviour of Mr Assange, the hostile and threatening declarations of its allied organisation, against Ecuador, and especially, the transgression of global treaties, have led the situation to a point where the asylum of Mr Assange is unsustainable and no longer viable", he said.

That probe was later dropped, but Assange fears he could be extradited to face charges in the U.S., where prosecutors are investigating mass disclosures of classified information through WikiLeaks. The site claims it has published more than 10 million documents since its inception.

Ecuador's president Lenin Moreno said on Twitter: "In a sovereign decision Ecuador withdrew the asylum status to Julian Assange after his repeated violations to worldwide conventions and daily-life protocols".

That probe was later dropped, but Assange fears he could be extradited to face charges in the USA where federal prosecutors are investigating WikiLeaks.

In November 2011, London's High Court said Julian Assange should be extradited to Sweden for questioning over alleged sex crimes after accusations by two former WikiLeaks volunteers in 2010.

The rules were imposed following claims Mr Assange interfered with the affairs of other states, blocked security cameras and mistreated guards and even accessed the security files of the embassy without permission.

There has been a warrant issued for him since June 2012, but he has been able to avoid arrest because Ecuador granted him asylum and housed him in its London embassy.

Moreno described it as a "sovereign decision" due to "repeated violations to worldwide conventions and daily-life".

Assuming he is extradited to the United States, Assange faces up to five years in prison.

"He has hidden from the truth for years and years and it is right that his future should be decided in the British judicial system", Hunt said. "No one is above the law", United Kingdom Home Secretary Sajid Javid tweeted.
