  • South Korea Will Be First To Roll Out 5G Services Beating US And China

The new network is predicted to drive technologies such as self-driving cars, augmented reality, VR and "smart cities", where sensors help cities to monitor everything from pollution to traffic.

Experts said that the 5G service will provide faster connectivity to the smartphone.

Rival US carrier AT&T deployed what it called its 5G E network in 12 cities a year ago with speeds faster than 4G networks but below those being deployed in other fifth-generation systems. "5G will create new innovations and added values through the convergence of various industries and by realizing services like autonomous navigation, unmanned robots, holograms and other services that have existed only in imagination".

Despite South Korea's claim to have won the battle for 5G bragging rights, Japan's Nikkei business paper said the race may still be too close to call, noting that Verizon's announcement was made at 11am USA eastern time, while South Korea's SK said it had switched on its service an hour earlier.

For general customers, the services will be available from Friday - the original launch date - when Samsung Electronics rolls out the Galaxy S10 5G, the world's first available smartphone with the technology built in.

SK Telecom said it was expanding in-building coverage around 120 department stores, shopping centres and airports. The phone is launched at South Korea.

The implications of the new technology have pitted Washington against Beijing - whose firms dominate 5G technology - in an increasingly bitter standoff.

The telecoms have been in a fierce fight with their United States rivals.

As we all know, Samsung is a South Korean based hardware manufacturer and therefore, it should come as no surprise that the company's biggest fan base is in South Korea.

Park Jung-ho, CEO of SK Telecom, talks up the operator's 5G offering on Wednesday at what SKT called the "beginning of the Age of Hyper-Innovation with 5G" at the company's 5G Launching Showcase. Nationwide mobile 5G service in the USA is not expected until at least 2020.

The system will work with Lenovo's Moto Z3 smartphone.

USA telco AT&T Inc said it was the first to launch a "commercial and standards-based" 5G network in December 2018.
