India chose a much lower orbit of less than 300 km during Mission Shakti for "capability demonstration" and to avoid threat of debris to global space assets, DRDO Chairman G Satheesh Reddy said on April 6.

During a press briefing on Tuesday (local time), Palladino said, "The issue of space debris, that is an important concern for the United States, and I would say that we took note of the Indian Government's statements that the test was created to address space debris issues". "Some of the debris have already decayed. All debris should decay within 45 days from March 27", said Reddy.

Days after the successful test of an anti-satellite missile (ASAT) under Mission Shakti, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on Saturday sought to ease concerns regarding the orbital debris in the space.

Mission Shakti has ensured that it secures a place in the space power league.

The DRDO chief said that a low orbit - below 300 km - was deliberately chosen to minimize debris.

The major challenges in the mission were to achieve "hit to kill" against a live satellite with an accuracy with less than 10 cm.

"We don't need any more tests in this (lower earth) orbit now", said Reddy. "All necessary permissions were taken", he said.

On March 30, P Chidambaram slammed Modi for announcing that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile capability, saying only a "foolish government" would make such a disclosure and "betray" a defence secret.

The long-term goal is to launch a platform carrying multiple satellites in order to clear more than 3,000 derelict satellites orbiting near our planet. "From our simulation, we can very clearly say that the possibilities of (debris) hitting the ISS are not there", Reddy said.

Asked if the missile has been in the making for some time now, he said, "Some of the basic technologies were being developed". It also said that it will lead to creation of almost 400 pieces of orbital debris. "We have conducted the test on 12th February against an electronic target which has given a lot of information for us with many applications". Some 150 scientists worked round-the-clock and some 2,000 components were sourced from 50 private industries. "When a country like India has done an exercise like this and shown capability of interception of a target, you have shown the capability for such operations".
