Trump backs off on healthcare agenda

  • Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate majority leader, said he told Trump on Monday the party was not about to restart work on comprehensive healthcare legislation, noting Republicans were unable to pass a plan when they controlled both chambers of Congress in the first two years of the Trump presidency.

"Trump signaled Monday night that he will not press for a vote on a bill to replace the Affordable Care Act until after next year's elections, apparently heeding warnings from fellow Republicans about the perils of such a fight during campaign season", according to a Monday report from The Washington Post.

He continued: "The Republicans are developing a really great HealthCare Plan with far lower premiums (cost) & deductibles than ObamaCare".

President Donald Trump - who has previously issued baseless claims about ballot-counting and voter fraud - warned House Republicans on Tuesday night to be "more paranoid" about vote tallies.

Trump's backtracking is just the latest sign that health care is a problematic issue for Republicans. Republicans have the right ideas on healthcare, and they have to explain why Democratic policies are killing our healthcare system. McConnell, facing increasing pressure from conservative groups, is promising to upend a longstanding Senate tradition in order to speed confirmations on a backlog of President Donald Trump's judicial nominees.

While Trump's references on Tuesday night were not specific, he claimed corruption and fraud past year in Florida and Arizona elections, where close races took considerable time to resolve.

Many Democrats, who benefited from prior rules changes under Obama, now say the GOP move will enable Trump and future presidents, so long as their party controls the Senate, to run roughshod over the Senate. But he still wants Republicans to campaign on the issue. "The health care? The health and well-being and the very lives of Americans?" In July 2017 Senator McCain and others voted against repeal because there was no replacement plan. The Affordable Care Act is also known as Obamacare because it was championed and enacted by President Barack Obama.

"They are the party that wants to end your health care", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said at a rally on Tuesday.

But other Democrats, McConnell said, indicated behind the scenes that they could support the rules change provided that it wouldn't take effect until the next administration.

"Don't let President Trump fool you, America".

Republicans' Texas. U.S. lawsuit rips away health coverage from 20 million Americans. Representative Kevin Brady said that if the Supreme Court did strike down Obamacare, Republicans would act to protect some provisions, including coverage guarantees for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

Senator John Thune, R, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said it makes sense to wait until after the election to attempt the large-scale health insurance overhaul the President was suggesting. That means, regardless of where you get your health insurance, if you have a pre-existing condition, you will be paying a lot more - if you can even get an insurance company to cover you.
