The Business Roundtable, a powerful private sector lobby, said in a letter to White House officials on Wednesday that shutting the border would severely damage USA businesses, particularly those that depend on employees who commute daily to work from Mexico. "Let's see. They have the power to stop them, they have the laws to stop them", Trump said earlier on Tuesday.

"But as Washington was asleep, Secretary Nielsen made some decisions on border response and decided she needed to oversee those personally".

"We are seeing our border patrol commissioner make it very clear that we are at a breaking point", she told newsmen at the White House.

"I'm ready to close it if I have to close it", President Trump said to reporters on Tuesday in his Oval Office.

While grocery prices and Canadian manufacturers would most immediately reflect the consequences of a closed U.S. -Mexico border, other commodities would also become short in supply in the very unlikely scenario that the closure persists for an extended period of time.

Trump stops to talk to reporters and members of the media as he walks to Marine One to depart from the South Lawn at the White House on Thursday, March 28, 2019 in Washington, DC. "And we will require those seeking to enter the United States to wait in Mexico until an immigration court as reviewed their claims".

He was not specific, but Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has asked Congress to give border officials the power to forcibly repatriate Central American illegal immigrants, including children who arrived alone, back to their countries.

"We're going to have a strong border or we're going to have a closed border", he said.

"I don't see how the industry can react in any way", Chesbrough said.

Trump praised efforts by Mexico to hinder illegal immigration from Central America at its own southern border.

Dozens of U.S. vehicle, engine, transmission and other auto parts plants could close because of a lack of components in the days after a border shutdown.

A group representing General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said in a statement that "any action that stops commerce at the border would be harmful to the United States economy, and in particular, the auto industry".

Mexico is the U.S.'s second-largest trading partner, meaning that any disruption at the US border could have immediate consequences on the economy.

Approximately 11,000 to 12,000 commercial trucks cross the border at Nogales daily, laden with about 50 million pounds of produce such as eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, and berries, he said.

And DHS officials said border crossing times were already lengthening as they divert staff to areas between official ports to deal with tens of thousands of migrant families crossing illegally into the country. She said virtually all USA auto production relies on some key parts from Mexico or Central America, and these products are brought into the United States on trucks or trains. While southeastern states like Florida and Georgia could grow numerous warm weather vegetables during the winter months, they are not able to grow enough to feed the entire country - largely due to the threat of frosts, freezes and hurricanes.
