  • Mitch McConnell stages show vote in the Senate on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's green new deal

(L-R) U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Rep. Donna Shalala (D-FL) listen as Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) speaks during a news conference at the U.S. Capitol January 30 in Washington, DC.

The Republican-led Senate Tuesday night voted against consideration of the Democratically-supported New Green Deal - the outline of an ambitious plan to get the USA off climate-changing fossil fuels.

The Senate voted down the measure, 0-57, with all Republicans, three Democrats, and one Independent voting against the bill.

The motion to proceed failed, with every Republican voting against the resolution along with Democrats Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Doug Jones of Alabama, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, and Angus King, an independent from ME who caucuses with Democrats. Mitch McConnell of holding a "sham" vote meant to divide Democrats, since the Republican majority leader allowed no hearings or expert testimony beforehand.

The Republican Party has no plan to deal with climate change other than just attack the people looking for solutions. Lee asked, but he already had a solution in mind.

In response, most if not all Democrats decided as a group to vote "present" on the resolution, essentially ducking the issue.

Donald Trump also weighed in against the plan, which the White House called "job crushing".

"This is not an elitist issue, this is a quality of life issue", she said. "Science should not be partisan", she continued, highlighting the importance of tackling climate change on both sides of the aisle.

Sen. Mike Lee didn't quite bring a snowball onto the Senate floor.

Lee's remarks enraged Democrats, who called climate change deadly serious, citing floods in the Midwest, wildfires in the West and hurricanes in the South. Indeed, the Green New Deal combines Roosevelt's economic approach of massive government projects to revive the economy with renewable energy and resource efficiency.

Ocasio-Cortez, who in January suggested implementing an income tax rate of up to 70 percent on wealthy Americans to pay for the plan, said the environmental costs to Americans are coming.

"I could not be more glad that the American people will have the opportunity to learn precisely where each one of their senators stand on the "Green New Deal": a radical, top-down, socialist makeover of the entire USA economy", McConnell tweeted Monday.

The Senate will also vote Tuesday on a $14 billion disaster aid bill for victims of hurricanes, tornadoes and drought during the last two years, which the House of Representatives passed in January. As McConnell explained on Twitter, his aim was to show voters which Democrats backed the radical restructuring of the USA economy that such a bill would entail.

"And I believe the Democrat cure for climate change, their 'Green New Deal, ' is so far out in left field that no one is going to take it seriously". Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduclast month.

"Climate change is not a joke", said Sen.

On Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez hit back at Lee over his remarks.

"Later today, the American people will see which of their senators can do the common-sense thing and vote "no" on this destructive socialist daydream", McConnell wrote.
