New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern leaves after the Friday prayers at Hagley Park outside Al-Noor mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand March 22, 2019. He was surrounded there by the imam and more than a dozen United Nations ambassadors from Muslim and non-Muslim countries including New Zealand and Australia, where the white supremacist who gunned down victims at the two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand was born. "We need to show our Muslim brothers and sisters that we are here for them".

The hijab-wearing gesture quickly gained traction across the country and on social media, with thousands of non-Muslim New Zealanders wearing the Islamic symbol to express sympathy.

Fifty people were killed last Friday in attacks on two mosques by an Australian white supremacist.

"I wanted to say: "We are with you, we want you to feel at home on your own streets, we love, support and respect you", Ashman said.

Burials of the victims begun on Wednesday, with a final mass burial expected after prayers on Friday. He has been remanded in custody without plea until April 5. "We are determined to not let anyone divide us", he added, as the crowd erupted with applause.

On Friday, scores of women in New Zeland wore headscarves remembering the mosque shooting victims. "Their blood has watered the seeds of hope", he said in prayers broadcast nationally.

A police spokesperson confirmed to AFP that one relative died from "a medical event", and that another also had died, but offered no further details in either case.

Residents of Christchurch are still recovering from a devastating quake that hit in 2011, killing 185 and injuring thousands.
