Spring Equinox supermoon to light up the skies tonight

  • The Equinox Super Worm Moon will rise on the same date as the first day of spring

This march, the full moon will also reach its peak within four hours of the spring equinox, the almanac said.

The reason why the moon is closer on some years and not others is because the moon's orbit around the Earth is not perfectly circular, but rather elliptical.

So why is this one called the "worm moon"?

It will be the third time this year a full moon has occurred near to the moon's closest approach to the Earth - making it a supermoon - and will be the last such event in 2019.

Tonight's full moon is often known as the worm moon in Native American folklore because it is around this time that earthworms start coming out from the soil as the snow starts to melt.

The full moon is also known as the worm moon: For millenniums, people across the world, including Native Americans in the eastern and central USA, named the months after nature's cues. This makes the moon look about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than normal, hence the term "supermoon", according to space.com. It's also the first supermoon in almost 20 years to fall near the spring equinox.

So it's an "equal night", which is where the word equinox originated: the two Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This marks the first time there's been a supermoon on Day 1 of spring since March 1981. Unfortunately, local sky observers seem likely to face increasing clouds by late Wednesday.

By the end of the day, spring will officially have sprung - even if it doesn't feel like yet it in your city.

The effectively means today marks the start of the Autumn season for all nations below the equator.

Spring begins this Wednesday at 2:58 p.m. PDT. This only happens one other day of the year, during the September equinox.

It takes a year for the earth to orbit the sun, and as it does so our planet spins on its own axis, each revolution taking a day.
