Israeli killed in West Bank 'terrorist' attack: army

  • At least 1 Israeli killed & 2 wounded in Palestinian attack in occupied West Bank

Israel's military expanded its massive manhunt for a Palestinian assailant on Monday as authorities announced that a second Israeli died of wounds sustained in a West Bank shooting attack the previous day.

Israeli security forces say Sunday's incident saw a 19-year-old Palestinian attack a soldier with a knife at a junction near Ariel and steal his weapon.

The death toll brings to two settlers killed when a Palestinian stabbed an Israeli soldier near the Ariel settlement before opening fire from his rifle on Israelis at a nearby bus station.

"The terrorist took the vehicle and used it to drive" to the nearby Gitai Avishar junction, where he opened fire and wounded another soldier, Conricus said.

Medics said they evacuated two Israeli men, aged 16 and 20, to hospital with both suffering bullet wounds and in serious condition.

During the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Israeli media reported that Netanyahu said he was "certain" that Israeli forces would apprehend the alleged attacker, and "we will deal with them to the fullest extent of the law, as we have done in all of the recent incidents".

Rabbi Achiad Ettinger, critically wounded in Sunday's shooting attack at the Ariel Junction in Samaria passed away this morning.

The leaders of the two parties are using the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to boost their electorate.

More than 260 Palestinians have also been killed over the same period.

In response, Al-Damiri denied making the statement, referring to the Palestine Now report as "lies and falsehoods attributed to [him]", claiming that the statements were "an attempt to distract from the Hamas Movement's actions against the citizens in the Gaza districts, in light of the peaceful We Want to Live protest", reported Palestinian news outlet Ma'an.

In a follow-up comment, Greenblatt said: "Disgustingly, but not surprisingly, Hamas & Palestinian Islamic Jihad welcomed the attack & no doubt the Palestinian Authority will reward the terrorist under its pay for slay policy". Troops went house to house to search for the gunman and the military said it had surveyed the suspect's home for demolition - a longstanding Israeli tactic that it argues is to deter attacks.

The news outlet also reported that Israeli forces are still searching for the attack suspect.

The settlements are located on lands which Israel seized during the 1967 Middle East war.

The attack, which didn't cause any damage or injury, was attributed to Hamas, despite the Sunni-Islamist fundamentalist organisation denied any involvement.

Last week Palestinians threw a firebomb into an Israeli police post at a site in Jerusalem revered by Jews as the Temple Mount and by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.
