  • Caution urged as Storm Gareth arrives in Limerick

The Met Office UK outlook for Friday 15 March to Sunday 24 March said: "Unsettled conditions are set to continue on Friday with strong winds and showers across northern and central areas".

As Storm Gareth moves away from the United Kingdom, the winds will ease and the rest of the week will remain unsettled with showers or spells of rain, and some brief drier interludes.

The nationwide snow/ice warning, which was issued this Saturday morning, states there is a risk of "scattered thundery showers of hail, sleet and snow" from 11pm today.

"Gusts of 50-55mph are likely inland and up to 65mph along western coasts." said Mr Gundersen.

Temperatures will be about average for the time of year - around 8C-11C (46.4F-51.8F) for most, Dewhurst said, but with the strength of the wind it will feel colder. Rain will spread southeastwards over the country on Wednesday night with some heavy bursts, especially in Atlantic coastal counties.

Met Eireann has also issued a status yellow rainfall warning for Connacht, with heavy rain followed by squally showers leading to a risk of rainfall accumulations of around 25 mm. This next band of heavy rain is expected to last for several hours, sweeping eastwards - and arriving in Plymouth at around 8am.

The Met Office say that "strong northwesterly winds" are expected during Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

This means the alerts are now in affect for large parts of Northern Ireland, most of England and southwest Scotland.

The forecast also details spells of snow early on Sunday morning over some central and northwestern parts of the United Kingdom, while high winds will affect southern England.

As the weather becomes warmer in the afternoon, the snow and sleet with transform over to rain.
