Children at a Blackpool school have been warned about "Momo", the internet phenomenon that allegedly tells children to take part in depraved "challenges" - and tells them they will be hurt if they try to tell.

Reports of the "Momo Challenge" have been circulating since past year.

"This is open to all parents across all age groups and will explore all aspects of online safety". From there, participants are told to complete various tasks to avoid being "cursed", with tasks that include photographic evidence of self-harm that they've inflicted upon themselves.

"The Momo thing is much more akin to an urban legend right now", said ReignBot, a YouTuber famous for videos digging into things like this on the Internet and social media.

"These video clips are appearing on many social media sites and YouTube (including Kids YouTube)".

- They will then receive instructions to perform a series of challenges, via SMS or Whatsapp. CBS News did reach out to Link Factory for comment.

The "Momo Challenge" noticeably started circulating around the web globally in 2018. "It's easy to block any phone number and we encourage users to report problematic messages to us so we can take action".

She said she felt "sick to her stomach" when Bre-Andria told her about Momo's surprise visit in a video available on YouTube Kids.

This will help to restrict the types of content that your child can view, as well as help you to monitor their activity. In addition to this, it's vital that you are aware of your device and account settings to ensure your child's utmost safety.

In a Facebook post, the Craigavon Police Department reported the challenge is being operated "by hackers who are looking for personal info".

"The danger lies with your child feeling pressured to either follow the orders of any app via "challenges", or peer pressure in chat rooms and the like". Here's more to know.

Police forces in Northern Ireland have also issued advice in reference to the Momo challenge, shared by other policing authorities in the United Kingdom. This time, the Suicide Game is back and invading YouTube content with audio cuts being placed in the middle of Fortnite and Peppa Pig videos. "Please be vigilant with your child using IT, images are very disturbing".

The Haslingden Primary School in Rossendale, England, also issued a warning on Facebook.

However, it encourages anyone who has seen "harmful or unsafe challenges on YouTube" to "flag them to us immediately".

A risky social media craze targeting young children has sparked concerns - but north-east officers said parents "should not panic".

'This freak scares me let alone my kids. While YouTube said it has taken steps to improve safety across its platforms, parents say it just isn't working. As CBS News further reported, the Momo challenge bears a resemblance to the 2017 "Blue Whale" challenge that allegedly led to the death of two teens in the USA, and others in Russia, Brazil and elsewhere.
