  • Trump's ex-fixer Cohen to offer new Russia details to U.S. Congress: source

The congressional hearing would be the first time Cohen has accused the president of committing a crime while in office.

Cohen is expected to testify before two separate House committees this week that Trump directed him to commit multiple crimes.

In response to details of Cohen's testimony, the White House said in a statement on Tuesday, "It's laughable that anyone would take a convicted liar like Cohen at his word, and pathetic to see him given yet another opportunity to spread his lies".

Cohen was sentenced to 36 months in prison in December for crimes including lying to Congress about Trump's business dealings with Russian Federation, and facilitating illegal payments.

On Wednesday he will appear before the House Oversight Committee in what could be an explosive open session.

Reports in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Reuters quote unnamed sources as saying that Cohen will allege that Trump lied about his wealth, used racist language and, after becoming president, reimbursed Cohen for hush-money payments the lawyer made to porn actress Stormy Daniels to keep quiet a sexual encounter between her and Trump.

The hearing, beginning at 10:00 am (15H00 GMT) Wednesday, is to start just hours before Trump is to sit down for talks in Hanoi with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - a coincidence of timing sharply deplored by Republicans and Trump supporters.

Sen. Richard Burr, chair of the Senate intelligence committee arrives for Cohen's testimony.

It's Cohen's first appearance before Congress since being charged for lying to the Senate and House Intelligence Committees in 2017.

Critics noted that the tweet sounded a lot like Trump's own threats to Cohen, which many argued were clear instances of witness intimidation - a federal crime.

She said, according to The New York Times: "Disgraced felon Michael Cohen is going to prison for lying to Congress and making other false statements".

The 52-year-old was convicted last year by NY federal prosecutors of campaign finance violations and tax evasion and by special counsel Robert Mueller of lying to Congress about Trump Organization plans in Moscow.

Republicans have been blasting away at Cohen's credibility, offering reminders that he pleaded guilty previous year to lying to Congress.

The news comes as Cohen is now in Washington, D.C. for three hearings before Congressional committees.

Trump blamed Cohen for mishandling the payments.

He is expected to offer financial documents showing possible tax fraud by Mr Trump, which may spur lawmakers to renew demands for the president's tax returns. He is due to testify before three congressional committees, some of which will meet behind closed doors.
