Dodgers re-enter Bryce Harper sweepstakes, interested in short-term deal

  • Report: Phillies, Harper in deep and serious negotiations

The bidding is down to the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.

ESPN reported that the Dodgers have re-entered the Harper sweepstakes, after having rumored to have dropped out, but unlike the other clubs, they're looking for a short-term deal.

Bryce Harper #34 of the Washington Nationals celebrates his run at the dugout from a Daniel Murphy #20 sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers during the fourth inning at Dodger Stadium on June 6, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. The Phillies are prepared to sign Harper to a lucrative long-term contract.

With the Giants and Padres showing some interest but neither seem to be in the position to offer Harper anything close to what Machado just earned, the White Sox have made it clear they aren't going to pursue Harper.

The Phillies did not get Machado because GM Matt Klentak said that there has to be a point where the front office says that they can not afford to spend the amount of money he was asking for.

It's been nearly five months since the Phils played their last regular season game and many projected Harper would be on their next regular season lineup card.

But the part that confuses me then is why are they in on Harper? However, Harper reportedly only wants the 10-year contract worth more than $300 million, or more than what Manny Machado got. Philadelphia has more money to spend than anyone, but they seem to be hoping that something less than a major record-breaking contract could get a deal done.

The consensus is that the Dodgers are not afraid to make Harper the highest paid player ever on an annual basis, they just don't want to hand out a long term deal.

Want your voice heard?

But then a parade of credible reports indicated the Dodgers were interested only on a very short-term deal, the kind that surely Harper was not going to have to settle for.
