  • Fire at government-run airshow in India destroys hundreds of cars

It said the Air Show and Aero India venues were unaffected. Hundreds of vehicles, including two-wheelers and cars, were seen parked in files in the open ground, surrounded by fire.

The event, which is organised by the Defence Ministry, is among the biggest air shows in the world.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, taking note of the incident, said he has instructed police and fire officials to take action.

"Department of Financial Services (DFS) has been requested by Ministry of Defence to open a special insurance claim cell to facilitate speedy claims for affected people in today's unfortunate fire incident in vehicle parking area of #AeroIndia2019", the tweet read.

The State Transport Department has also opened a centre at the Yelahanka RTO to issue duplicate documents to those who lost them due to the fire.

Two customer demonstration flights were on while the fire broke out and the show continued unhampered. At least 10 fire force and five fire engines were deployed to control the fire. Fire is fully extinguished now.

A probe has been ordered to investigate the cause of fire, India's Defence Minsitry said. No injuries or any harm to people was reported.

The cars then were pushed out of the fire area to create an artificial break in the fire, he added. CFT foam was sprayed on the vehicles to prevent spreading of fire.

This incident comes just 4 days after an accident involving two airborne planes of Surya Kiran aerobatics team collided with each other during the rehearsals for the air show on February 19 in which one pilot, Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi was killed.
