  • WTA Dubai Simona Halep Petra Kvitova and Garbine Muguruza reach R3

The crowd favourite and third seed Halep, supported even in the middle of a workday by scores of chanting, enthusiastic local Romanian fans, beat Tsurenko of the Ukraine 6-3, 7-5, breaking seven times from 10 chances.

Halep came through a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Lesia Tsurenko, winning the first set easily, despite there being six service breaks.

Elsewhere, Hsieh Su-Wei defeated Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-1, 6-2 while Viktoria Kuzmova accounted for seventh seed Kiki Bertens, beating this month's St Petersburg champion 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8/6).

"Our defending champion Elina Svitolina played magnificently to reach the quarter-finals and it will take a very special performance to prevent her becoming the first WTA player to win the title for three consecutive years", said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free.

"I tried to be quicker today than yesterday", she said. I had something different to do in my life. I couldn't really serve well today at all.

"I feel close to my highest level", Halep told a media conference after the win.

"I'm still a little angry about it as I felt I was playing really good and I was playing good shots during the game", Jabeur said.

Simona Halep wins one her typical battles in the 3rd round in Dubai.

Halep reached the final in Doha last week and looks set to go similarly deep at this Premier 5 event after booking a last-eight spot in the United Arab Emirates. "I feel confident when I play her".

But the player bounced back all guns blazing in the match that lasted for two hours and 34 minutes.

"For me, I just want to have the mentality of not thinking so much who is in the other side of the net", the 24-year-old said. Also I have no expectations. "I'm confident. I feel good on court even if I'm exhausted".

"I think they both looked little bit exhausted", Svitolina said of the Halep-Bencic quarterfinal. She stole Pliskova's serve at love in game nine after a double fault from the Czech and closed the opener with a service victor for a 6-4 after 37 minutes.

It was the second major surprise in a week involving US Open champion Osaka, who announced she had parted ways with Sascha Bajin, the coach who had guided her in both her Grand Slam victories.

Sviolina is on a hot streak in the emirate, winning the last two editions and her last 10 Dubai matches.

Osaka wiped away tears as she spoke of the challenge of adjusting to her new celebrity.
