  • Teen who fled Britain to join Islamic State now pregnant wants to come home

LONDON (AP) - Shamima Begum, a London teenager who left Britain four years ago to join the Islamic State group, is to be stripped of her United Kingdom citizenship by the government, her family's lawyer said Tuesday.

Shamima Begum's family received a letter from the Home Office notifying them that the government meant to revoke the 19-year-old's citizenship, a development first reported by ITV News.

It is illegal under worldwide law to deprive someone of their nationality where to do so would leave that person stateless, and Javid said that in each case, the government would "absolutely make sure that if we go ahead and take that decision [to remove citizenship] that they will not be left stateless".

Begum fled her east London home in 2015 to travel to Syria to support IS, but now wishes to return home for the sake of her third child, who was born at the weekend.

Jarrah - who is named in hour of a barbaric jihadi warlord at the request of her terrorist husband - could however return to the UK.

"She has no allegiance to the standards of the British state and our values". I think the only reason she wants to come back is she couldn't stay where she was.

Begum's dual nationality - as both her parents are of Bangladeshi - reportedly cleared the way for today's decision.

Under the 1981 British Nationality Act, a person can be deprived of their citizenship if the home secretary is satisfied that it would be "conducive to the public good" and they would not become stateless as a result.

Conservative MP George Freeman condemned the decision to revoke Begum's citizenship, calling it a "mistake and a risky precedent".

She had pleaded to be repatriated back to her family in London and said that she was not a threat.

The decision by home secretary Sajid Javid comes despite justice secretary David Gauke saying last week that Ms Begum could not be left "stateless" under worldwide law.

CCTV images issued by the Metropolitan Police in London in 2015, show Shamima Begum, center, and her friends walking through security at Gatwick airport, on their way to Syria.

A letter sent Tuesday from the Home Office to Begum's mother, and obtained by ITV News, said: "In light of the circumstances of your daughter. the order removing her British citizenship has subsequently been made".

Ms Begum has said she does not regret travelling to Syria, however, she said she did not agree with everything the IS group had done. "I'm not going to go back and provoke people to go to ISIS or anything, if anything I'm going to encourage them not to go because it's not all as it seems in their videos".

The Home Secretary's decision to strip Begum of her citizenship will come as a surprise to many.

Leading politicians, including interior minister Sajid Javid, have vowed to prevent her return, pointing to her lack of remorse for joining the terror group.

The Home Office letter read: "Dear Mrs Begum". Now aged 19, she has told reporters she wants to return to Britain.
