Mejia Backs Sanders for Prez in 2020

  • Sen. Bernie Sanders will run a second presidential campaign after battling Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination

"It is absolutely imperative that Donald Trump be defeated, because I think it is unacceptable and un-American, to be frank with you, that we have a president who is a pathological liar and it gives me no pleasure to say that, but it's true", CBS News quoted him as saying today.

"I really want to be sure the person who I ultimately support is going to take a hard look at diversity and ensure they are reaching out to all communities, particularly people of color and women", said Lucy Flores, a former Nevada state legislator and USA congressional candidate who backed Sanders last time but is uncommitted for 2020. "Bernie opened the door for progressive politics, but I think he has to recognize there are new voices and a new bench".

"I also think he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, a xenophobe, somebody who is gaining cheap political points by trying to pick on minorities, often undocumented immigrants", Mr Sanders said. After four two-year terms as mayor, Sanders ran for the state's sole House seat in 1990.

He garnered passionate support among young liberals with his calls for universal health care, a US$15 minimum wage and free public university education. In his second run, Sanders is vowing to launch a grassroots movement that will "lay the groundwork for transforming the economic and political life of this country". The 77-year-old self-described democratic socialist challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016.

Sanders is running against other notable candidates, such as New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, California Senator Kamala Harris and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. His current geriatric possible rival for the nomination is former DE senator and Democrat vice president Joe Biden, who was born in 1942.

Sanders - an independent who caucuses with the Democrats - is one of the best-known names to join a crowded and diverse field of Democratic candidates, and early polls suggest he is far ahead.

Sanders, a socialist "independent" who's not even officially a Democrat, was born in Brooklyn in 1941 and honeymooned in the Soviet Union in 1988, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of his beloved Communism.

Sanders has been a critic of President Donald Trump in the past and called him "the most unsafe president in modern American history" in his email. He left the Democratic Party after losing the primary but will now presumably rejoin it to run again.

His campaign will also have to address lingering anger between his supporters and supporters of Clinton, who blame Sanders's extended primary campaign for hurting her in the general election.

However, his fledgling campaign struck a chord with party rebels exhausted of what they termed the "swamp" of established Washington politicians.

After graduating, Mr Sanders worked on an Israeli kibbutz and moved to Vermont, where he worked as a carpenter and filmmaker.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Sanders' candidacy is how he'll compete against someone like Warren, who shares many of his policy goals.

The Vermont Senator branded Trump an "embarrassment".
