  • Minnesota DOT releases video of school bus driver getting shot in head: report

Lilly then allegedly stopped his auto in the lane of traffic and walked toward the bus.

A school bus driver was shot in the head in an apparent road rage incident that stopped traffic on a snowy Minneapolis highway Tuesday. Two of the bullets struck the 78-year-old male bus driver in the head and left arm.

The violent ordeal unfolded after the alleged gunman, identified as 31-year-old Kenneth Lilly, drove his Toyota in front of a pickup truck and school bus before getting out of the vehicle and firing his gun, police said.

The bus driver told authorities that Lilly seemed to be trying to get on the bus, but the driver yelled that he couldn't let him on as there was a child on board, the complaint said.

Officials said the bus driver stayed awake as he was taken to a nearby hospital and is doing OK.

On Thursday, Brown's office charged Lilly with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault with a unsafe weapon. Minneapolis Public Schools confirmed one of its students was on the bus at the time of the incident and was unharmed.

According to a criminal complaint, Minneapolis police officers were called to a shooting Tuesday on Interstate 35W near Chicago Avenue. No attorney was listed for him in court records.

"The actions of Mr. Lilly were outrageous and it was sheer luck that neither the bus driver nor the little girl were killed", Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a news release. He told officers that he shot at the bus driver because he had feared for his safety, but the complaint says video footage shows he had retreated to a safe spot before walking back in front of the bus to start shooting.

Lilly later called 911 to report the shooting.

His first court appearance is on Friday and he faces 20 years in prison if convicted.
