Apple Scrambles to Fix FaceTime Privacy Bug, Disables Group FaceTime

  • Apple FaceTime glitch lets you silently snoop on others

In other words, this is a bug that you can't control from your end, because it's triggered by the activation of a feature in the app by the person who initiated the call. Apple plans to release a software update to fix the bug "later this week", an Apple spokesperson told Reuters.

Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, a company that has also had its share of privacy issues in recent memory, called on users to disable FaceTime until Apple fixes the issue.

"You can FaceTime any iOS device running 12.1 and listen in remotely-WITHOUT THE OTHER PERSON ANSWERING THE CALL".

Essentially, if you started a FaceTime with one of your contacts and then added your own number to the "Add Person" box, you could hear the phone audio from the person you originally called before they even pick up. Users can also disable FaceTime on iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches in settings and on the Mac under the Preferences tab in the FaceTime application.

Before the world learned about Apple's FaceTime bug, a 14-year-old boy in Arizona first discovered it, while playing a game of Fortnite with his friends.

What we have also found is that if the person presses the Power button from the lock screen, their video is also sent to the caller - unbeknownst to them.

In theory, Apple's block of Group FaceTime in the FaceTime infrastructure itself ought to prevent the bug being exploited.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo urged New Yorkers to turn off FaceTime until the problem was fixed. Apple is working on a software fix which they expect to release later this week, according to CNBC.

That said, this FaceTime incident is a serious blow to Apple's carefully constructed image of the champion of privacy.

It's possible Apple may have been able to eliminate this issue before the vast majority of fans even noticed it, however.

On a Mac, launch the FaceTime app, go to FaceTime menu near the top left and click on Turn FaceTime Off.
