At the start of his third year in office, US President Donald Trump is presiding over the longest federal government shutdown in history.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the amendment was created to "break the deadlock" and rule out a "disastrous" no-deal Brexit.

"It really does feel a bit like 'Groundhog Day, ' " Corbyn said.

"So I will be talking further this week to colleagues - including in the DUP - to consider how we might meet our obligations to the people of Northern Ireland and Ireland in a way that can command the greatest possible support in the House".

"And I will then take the conclusions of those discussions back to the European Union", she said.

He said: "We'd have to negotiate an agreement on customs and regulations so that there would be no hard border".

Theresa May is to set out her next steps to build a Commons majority for a Brexit deal amid signs she is still unwilling to give ground on her central demands.

MPs are putting forward plans to change the outcome of Brexit ahead of a vote next week on the PM's amended deal.

The party's amendment calls for a vote on Labour's plan for a customs union with the EU, and whether to legislate "to hold a public vote on a deal or a proposition" that is supported by a Commons majority.

Mrs Foster said the issue of the Irish backstop needed to be dealt with "in a very clear way". "Now we must at last find out what they want", he said.

Pressed whether there was any scope for a bilateral deal between the United Kingdom and Ireland, he responded: "We are one team".

Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows voted against the Government's Brexit deal last week.

"Sympathy, patience and readiness to wait until the UK's position will be clarified are of utmost importance to avoid the worst", said industry minister Peter Altmaier.

May refused to rule out delaying Britain's departure from the European Union on Monday as she came under pressure from a cross-party group of politicians who have proposed a new law that could force her to ask the European Union to extend the Brexit deadline.

GBPUSD breached 1.29 handle once again yesterday as news of plan b action proposed by PM May in United Kingdom parliament hit the market.

His amendment came as backbencher Yvette Cooper published her own separate, cross-party bill aimed at instructing Theresa May to delay Brexit by nine months if agreement can't be found before February 26.

It is understood she will focus on the possibility of changes to the backstop mechanism, created to ensure there's no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, if a broader trade deal can not be agreed. It is meant as a temporary measure that would last until a permanent solution is found.

Great Britain is the world's fifth-largest economy, and any Brexit-related hit to its global trade could send shockwaves throughout the planet.

But in a potential breakthrough for Mrs May's hopes of winning further concessions on the backstop, Poland's foreign minister suggested it could apply for a maximum of five years.

The idea got a cool reception.

After reports that Whitehall officals were exploring a new Anglo-Irish agreement, Simon Coveney, Ireland's deputy prime minister, refused to split from backing the EU's Withdrawal Agreement.

MPs would hold another vote on Mrs May's deal - even though the outcome could be the same as the historic rejection last Tuesday; vote on whether the Government should seek to renegotiate the deal on specified terms; vote on whether to leave the European Union without a deal on March 29; and vote on whether to have another referendum.
