Oscar nominations 2019: Interesting facts about this year’s nominees

  • Roma from Alfonso Cuaron is a black and white ode to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City

Despite all the prognostications and precursors, the Oscars always throw a few curveballs with its nominations.

Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman engage in a fighting match in a scene from the "Black Panther", 2018. Eighth Grade got shut out, for instance.

One of the most talked-about snubs from the morning was the omission from the Best Documentary Feature category of the beloved Mr. Rogers doc "Won't You Be My Neighbor", which was the year's biggest non-fiction hit (it made more than $21 million at the box office).

We've now got a pretty clear frontrunner for the Best Picture prize in the shape of Alfonso Cuaron's slow-burn drama Roma, while its other main competitors had something of a mixed afternoon.

Lee scooped up another Oscar nomination on Tuesday, but it was his first for directing.

Not really a surprise since the film has been campaigning HARD for this, and it's well deserved considered the cultural importance and success of the Marvel film.

Netflix must be celebrating today, with not only "Roma" pulling in 10 nominations but the Coen brothers receiving a nod for penning their anthology western film.

The Oscars will be handed out on Sunday, February 24th.

First, this is year the Netflix broke through.

Screenwriter Tony McNamara was nominated for Best Original Screenplay for The Favourite, while Fiona Crombie was nominated for Best Production Design on the same movie, which also received a nod for Best Picture.

A University of Kansas professor has been nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. And Roma also landed both actress nominations, with breakthrough performer Yalitza Aparicio getting a Best Actress nomination and Marina de Tavira scoring in Best Supporting Actress. "Thank you @TheAcademy! #WakandaForever", she wrote on Twitter.

Clearly, the Academy does not have a Netflix bias any longer.

What do you all make of Black Panther's Best Picture nomination? It turns out, all they needed to do was hand carte blanche to prestige filmmakers, and suddenly they're in the big club. First Reformed is the sort of quietly understated critical darling that often struggles to wow the Academy, so it's a pleasant surprise to see it landing a nomination. Maybe they just didn't see it?

Elsewhere, there were snubs for British hopefuls Emily Blunt and Claire Foy.

Regina King stars as Sharon in "If Beale Street Could Talk". King is considered by many to be the front-runner in her category.

Mary Poppins Returns showed up in few categories (Costume Design, Production Design, Score, and Song), but not almost as many as the film's copious guild and critics awards may have predicted. Justin Hurwitz just won a couple Oscars for La La Land, so perhaps the Academy thought he's had his moment, but the First Man score is a real standout.

Based on what the overall Oscar roster indicates, it's questionable.
