President Donald Trump responded to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) rejection of his border-wall proposal on January 20, as he outlined the selling points of his new offer, chiding Democrat leaders for dismissing him before he even gave his speech. He faces an uphill climb in breaking the Senate's 60-vote threshold of a filibuster, with Democrats insisting that they will not negotiate on immigration until Trump reopens the government.

But Trump went on to note that work on the wall is ongoing with or without Democratic support, and that the wall will become a reality regardless of what both the White House and Congress decide to do about existing legal and illegal immigrants.

"Nancy Pelosi and some of the Democrats turned down my offer yesterday before I even got up to speak".

"Unfortunately, initial reports make clear that his proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives, each of which is unacceptable and in total do not represent a good faith effort to restore certainty to people's lives", Pelosi's statement read.

Trump said that he was offering a "common-sense compromise" but proposing 3 years of legislative relief for 750,000 DACA recipients, young adults who illegally arrived in the United States as children, and a 3-year extension of stay for some 300,000 migrants with temporary protected status.

The Trump administration - increasingly blamed by Americans for the shutdown - is trying to balance demands of those hard-liners and Democrats who adamantly oppose spending the $5.7 billion Trump wants for a wall. But Democrats says talks on border security should occur only after the government is reopened.

Vice President Mike Pence conceded the White House may not have enough votes in the Senate to advance President Donald Trump's deal to end the shutdown.

"I've been talking about barriers for a long time", Clyburn said.

Trump tweets that, "there will be no big push to remove the 11,000,000 plus people who are here illegally", but adds: "be careful Nancy!"

"This is yet another bogus offer from a president who changes his mind on a whim and can't be trusted", Senator Mazie Hirono said.

US President Donald Trump has attacked Democrats for rejecting his proposals to end the longest government shutdown in US history.

Trump has offered to extend temporary protections for young people brought to the US illegally and for those who fled disaster zones.

Pelosi and other Democrats call for Trump to delay his scheduled State of the Union address until after the government shutdown.

"Both sides in Washington must simply come together, listen to each other, put down their armour, build trust, reach across the aisle and find solutions", Trump said.

The three-year extension for the 700,000 illegal immigrants under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy offers "legislative relief" that would allow for work permits, social security numbers, and protection from deportation.

"In a very real sense, what President Trump did here was he set the table for a deal", Pence said on "Fox News Sunday".

Republicans have a 53-seat majority in the upper chamber and need seven Democrats to vote yes in order to move the president's deal on the path to passage.

The President noted that he had adopted some Democratic proposals on border security.

The recent surge coming in the midst of the partial shutdown indicates that Trump's Latino base strongly support the construction of a border wall.

Apart from the $5.7bn wall, the proposal also included a host of measures to beef up border security and fend off drug traffickers, such as recruiting an additional 2,750 border agents and allocating $800mn in urgent humanitarian assistance, and $805mn to combat drug trafficking.

But more common was the reaction of Rep. Adam B. Schiff, California Democrat, who accused the White House on Sunday of politicking. "Walls are not immoral, in fact it is the opposite of immoral", Mr. Trump said.

A second tweet appeared aimed at the conservative right, which fears the offer he made on immigration would amount to an amnesty.
