China’s Military Modernizing to Invade Taiwan, Says Pentagon Report

  • China is rapidly building robust lethal force to impose its will in the region US official

"China urges the USA military to reasonably and objectively treat China's military development and safeguard the military ties between the two countries", she added.

The government yesterday said that it would not bow to Chinese pressure and called for the support of the global community against China's "out-of-control actions" after Beijing urged Apple, Amazon.com and other foreign companies to change the way they refer to Taiwan.

According to the DIA report, China has been acquiring technology "by any means available" - and its military is now more advanced than ever.

"The biggest concern is that they are going to get to a point where the [Chinese military] leadership may actually tell [Chinese President] Xi Jinping that they are confident in their capabilities", the official said on condition of anonymity.

Several companies in the recent months have been under Chinese scrutiny over how they refer to Taiwan.

The drills follow intelligence from the U.S. over China's growing military might, with concern growing that Taiwan may become a target.

A senior defense official said the U.S. was concerned that China's increased capabilities may lead its military commanders to advise its political leaders that they were confident of military success with regard to a campaign against Taiwan.

China has repeatedly sent military aircraft and ships to circle the island on drills in the past few years and worked to isolate the island internationally, whittling down its few remaining diplomatic allies.

In the talks, Chinese General Li Zuocheng, chief of China's Central Military Commission Joint Staff Department, stressed that Taiwan was "China's internal affairs" and that Beijing would allow "no external interference". China has previously stated that its military will "pay any price", to ensure its sovereignty over Taiwan, an area it regards as a key part of its territory.

Washington has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help it defend itself and is the island's main source of arms.

Beijing has stepped up pressure on Taiwan since independence-leaning Tsai won presidential elections in 2016.

Still, the US defense intelligence official cautioned against over-reacting, noting Xi could believe he has plenty of time to achieve reunification with Taiwan. The growing military might of China is said to be the primary focus for acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who defense officials said has repeatedly raised China as a topic in closed-door meetings in the Pentagon since he took the Defense Department's reins January 1.

"I think in a lot of ways, they have a lot that they need to do", the official said.

The Chinese rail network has about 100,000 kilometers of track, 10,000 kilometers of which is high-speed track supporting trains running at up to 250 kilometers per hour, the Pentagon said in its 2019 "China Military Power" report.

USA defense officials have become particularly alarmed about China's advances in super-fast "hypersonic" technology, which could allow it to field missiles that are far harder to detect.

After making some of the most advanced weapons in the world China is in the cusp of imposing its will in the region, which includes India.
