City can't afford £100m Ruben Neves, says Pep Guardiola

"I didn't speak with him so that one time I can not say what he thinks because I don't know", said Guardiola.

Guardiola tried to sign Jorginho from Napoli to fulfil that role last summer but the player opted to join Chelsea instead.

In any case, Guardiola has intimated he is not sure if Neves, who City will face when Wolves visit the Etihad Stadium on Monday, would fit into his preferred system.

"But, of course, for the next season it's an important target to find".

"Fernandinho's role, it's so hard to find [a similar player]", he added. "He'll be 34 and he can not play every few days". "It involves playing with two holding midfielders - not just one - but he's an excellent player". That is not going to happen. We are not going to pay £100 million for a holding midfielder.

Despite the likelihood of losing out on De Jong, Guardiola has no qualms over the work being done by City director of football Txiki Begiristain and his team to bring in top-class players.

"You have to pay the club, pay the family and talk with the players, and with the agents, it's nuts".

In the meantime, Guardiola will hope Ilkay Gundogan can fill in if needed.

And two stunning cup victories in the space of four days - albeit against lower league clubs Rotherham and Burton Albion - suggested the clinical, cutting edge that characterised City's play during last season's record-breaking title-winning campaign was back.

"His quality is incredible". And the fact that he can play anywhere across the midfield would be priceless for Spurs, who, as mentioned earlier, have had their key midfielders, miss a chunk of the season due to injuries. "He's a fantastic player".

"We realised that last season in Carabao Cup, we saw how complicated they are", he said.

However, in his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City's crunch match against Wolves on Monday night, Guardiola seemed to rule out any January additions.
