  • Tulsi Gabbard announces she will run for president in 2020

A formal announcement of her candidacy will follow in the coming weeks, Gabbard said in comments released by CNN on Friday evening.

Gabbard's declaration follows a December 12 appearance on MSNBC's "Hardball" in which she said she was "seriously considering" a presidential run.

Gabbard, 37, said "the issue of war and peace" would be the main focus of her campaign.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision. There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", she told Jones, listing issues such as health care, criminal justice reform and climate change.

While The Intercept's analysis of Gabbard's financial records showed several donors tied to "Sangh Parivar-a network of religious, political, paramilitary, and student groups that subscribe to the Hindu supremacist, exclusionary ideology known as Hindutva", Shankar reports that "Gabbard has begun to distance herself from the Sangh affiliates-at least publicly", noting speculation that the congresswoman, a member of the House committees on Foreign Affairs and Armed Services and co-chair of the India Caucus, meant to run for president.

The 37-year-old Iraq War veteran is the first Hindu elected to Congress and the first member of Congress born in the United States territory of American Samoa. "Will you join me?" she asked on Twitter.

Outside of cultivating her image as an anti-interventionist, however, Gabbard has urged a continuation of the so-called war on terror.

Gabbard is so far left that she lost the support of a Hawaii teacher's union over her handling of Syria. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., becoming a sought-after surrogate in the primaries.

Her willingness to challenge American interventions in countries like Iraq and Libya has cultivated her anti-war image. "I walked out thinking that there may be some opportunity to work with this Administration to shift our foreign policy in a more positive, less destructive direction", she said, and then paused.

According to CNN, Senator Sanders's 2016 deputy campaign manager Rania Batrice will be Ms Gabbard's campaign manager.

The 2020 presidential primary cycle is scheduled to kick off from the Iowa Caucuses on February 3, 2020, followed by the New Hampshire Primary on February 11, Nevada caucus of February 15 and SC on February 22.

Former US vice president Joe Biden has also expressed his interest in the 2020 bid.

A dozen other aspirants have expressed interest in running - among them, former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg, former vice-president Joe Biden, Congressman Beto O'Rourke and Eric Swalwell, Senators Cory Booker, Sherrod Brown, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Bob Casey, and governors Steve Bullock and Terry McAuliffe.
