According to Marc Stein of The New York Times, the National Basketball Association has launched a formal review into Cleveland waiving the two-time Golden State Warriors champion before his contract would become guaranteed. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no details of the probe have been revealed publicly.
After just 10 days, the Cavaliers waived McCaw, an unusual decision for a team that went out of its way to sign him.
The New York Times first reported that the National Basketball Association was reviewing the matter. The Warriors, McCaw's former employer, complained to the National Basketball Association about it, and the league is investigating, multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic.
McCaw had a prolonged restricted free agency that ended when the Cavaliers signed McCaw to a two-year, $6 million deal.
Patrick McCaw entered this past offseason as one of many restricted free agents that figured to have a hard time finding a deal they wanted with so many teams unable to create cap space to bring in new players via free agency.
"I've got enough to worry about", Kerr said, before adding, "The whole thing was kind of odd".
McCaw played three games with the Cavs, who waived him Sunday and did so before his contract would have been guaranteed for the remainder of this season. Monday marked the deadline for non-guaranteed deals to become guaranteed, meaning McCaw becomes an unrestricted free agent after he clears waivers.
Some have speculated the Cavaliers made the moves to spite the franchise that beat them in three of the past four NBA Finals.
