  • Mike Pence and others get sweetheart pay raises while Trump stiffs federal workers report

As hundreds of thousands of federal workers go without pay amid a government shutdown, Donald Trump's political appointees are set to get raises of $10,000 a year.

An executive pay freeze, which caps the salaries of top government employees and has been in place since 2013, lapsed on December 21 because Congress was unable to pass the spending bill in which it was included, leading to the government shutdown that's now gone on for two weeks. Cabinet secretaries will go from more than $199,000 to over $210,000.

Deputy secretaries would get a raise from $179,700 to $189,600, and Pence is scheduled to get a hike from $230,700 to $243,500, the paper reported.

Appearing on Tucker Carlson Tonight, the vice president reiterated what has been the Trump's administration stance on border wall funding for the past 13 days during which the Federal government has been shutdown.

The pay raise issue arose as Trump, Pence, and Congressional leaders met again on Friday to try to come to an agreement on a budget to end the partial shutdown, which is affecting about 25 percent of the federal government.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, later explained that the administration was "exploring options to prevent this from being implemented while some federal workers are furloughed" and described the situation as "another unnecessary byproduct of the shutdown" that she said could be remedied by Congress.

"[It] would be prudent for agencies to continue to pay these senior political officials at the frozen rate", Weichert wrote in a memo to the heads of executive departments and agencies. A pay cap on top officials was enacted in 2013, but must be renewed every year.

The government's Office of Personnel Management did not respond to a request for comment. If lawmakers don't take action by Saturday, the accumulated raises will begin showing up on the paychecks of Cabinet secretaries, deputy secretaries and even Vice President Mike Pence.

The extension of the long-standing freeze on raises was included in bills that were not acted on before the 115 Congress ended, according to published reports.

The move comes a week after Trump signed an executive order freezing non-military federal workers' 2019 pay.
