How Democrats Took Aim at Trump With New House Rules

  • Trump digs in on Day 12 of shutdown, calling a border wall timeless, not antiquated -- like the wheel

President Donald Trump said the partial government shutdown that entered its 12th day Wednesday could continue for "a long time" as he met with congressional leaders. The US president continues to stick to his demand that Congress approve a $5-billion (€4.4 billion) plan to construct a US-Mexico border wall aimed at thwarting illegal immigration. Democrats rejected the demand and parts of the federal government have been shut since December 22 because of lack of funding as a result.

But the bills will not include funding for President Donald Trump's Mexican border wall, the cause of the shutdown.

The House majority now passes to the Democrats following the November mid-term elections.

The House formally picked veteran Democratic lawmaker Pelosi as its Speaker, elevating the liberal from San Francisco for her second stint in one of Washington's most powerful jobs.

The Democrats plan to vote on a bipartisan package of six Senate spending bills and a stopgap measure to re-open the Department of Homeland Security at its current funding levels until February 8, the aide said.

Pence proposed a compromise nearly two weeks ago in a closed-door meeting with Democrats just hours before a shutdown of parts of government that lacked appropriations for the current fiscal year. Last month, he initially agreed to a budget deal without wall funding that would have averted a shutdown, but he reneged under pressure from conservative commentators.

"We're asking the president to open up government", Ms Pelosi said "We have given the Republicans a chance to take yes for an answer".

"Trump said on Twitter".

"This is the Trump shutdown, through and through".

In her opening speech Thursday, Pelosi noted she was especially "proud to be the woman Speaker of the House of this Congress, which marks 100 years of women winning the right to vote, as we serve with more than 100 women in the House of Representatives - the highest number in history". "The president knows that".

There will be 235 Democrats in the new Congress and there will be a variety of opinions on what to do about Trump.

"We talked about all aspects of it, and it was a civil discussion and we're hopeful that somehow in the coming days and weeks we'll be able to reach an agreement", McConnell said.

Soon after, Pelosi paid tribute to former President George H.W. Bush, who she called a "cherished former member of this body" and a "beloved" commander-in-chief.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers won't see a paycheck until the government reopens.

"Hopefully we're going to have a lot of things we can get done together and I think it's actually going to work out", said Mr Trump.

The session did not yield any breakthroughs, and Democrats said they remained committed to introducing the legislation Thursday.

At another point Wednesday, Trump told Pelosi that, as a "good Catholic" she should support the wall because Vatican City has a wall, according to a congressional aide.
