Mulvaney: $5B Border Wall Demand 'Came Down,' But Dems Walked Out

  • Trump threatens to shut down border as government funding stalemate drags

Top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi has been spotted vacationing in Hawaii while the partial government shutdown drags on and heads toward its second week. No moves were made to end the continuing impasse, which has left hundreds of thousands of federal workers either on unpaid leave or not knowing when they'll be paid.

Trump had demanded approximately $5 billion in funding for the wall, but Democrats have so far refused to go above $1.3 billion for more general border security.

Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi, a critic of President Trump's border wall proposal who previously attacked his "manhood" over his calls for funding, is reportedly spending a period of the government shutdown at a luxury hotel in Hawaii.

"Thank you to Sean Parnell for the nice comments on @foxandfriends about the troops wonderful reaction to Melania and I in Iraq and Germany".

Trump wants $5 billion in funding for a wall along the more than 2,000-mile border, which he says is now too porous to stop illegal immigration and which he says has become a magnet for criminals, drugs and even terrorists.

Meanwhile, Trump cancelled plans to spend Christmas and the New Year with his family at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

"For the White House to try and blame anyone but the president for this shutdown doesn't pass the laugh test", said Justin Goodman, a spokesman for Schumer.

Trump said he would then take US-Mexican relations back to the days before the NAFTA agreement opened free trade across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

"So, we have bills that get taken right out from that paycheck and how are we going to pay them?" she said. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who opened the Senate on Thursday for a session that only lasted minutes.

"If they can't do it before January 3, then we will do it", said Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., incoming chairman of the Rules Committee.

Some White House allies said the president was passing up a chance to set the terms of the debate at a time when his Democratic rivals have ceded the megaphone to him.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Pence proposed spending $2.5 billion on border security, including the wall, in a stopgap spending bill during his Friday and Saturday meetings with Schumer on Capitol Hill last week.

In a reprise of his threat before the midterm elections to cut off aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador as a caravan of migrants was making its way toward the United States, Trump said that those three countries "are doing nothing for the United States but taking our money".

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, responded to the president's tweets via a prepared statement and did not address the threat to cut off aid to Central American countries.

The president's comments are in line with his administration's prior statements denying any culpability for children who die in US custody.

His tweets are the president's first public comment about the deaths of two children, an eight-year-old boy named Felipe Gomez Alonzo and a seven-year-old girl named Jakelin Caal, who were taken into custody with their parents after attempting a risky crossing into the United States at the Mexico border.
