A transformer explosion turned the New York City skyline blue

  • A transformer explosion at a power plant in Queens temporarily lit the sky bright blue on Dec. 27 2018 in New York

A substation explosion in Queens caused scattered power outages and bathed the New York City skyline in bright blue light for several minutes.

Most famously, rising floodwaters from Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 led to a massive explosion at Con Ed's power plant at 14th Street and the East River, shutting down electrical service to almost all of lower Manhattan and creating a pretty impressive blue flash of its own (though many New Yorkers were too busy fleeing rising seas to notice at the time). New York City Council member Costa Constantinides tweeted out that the NYPD's 114th district was on the scene, and thankfully there has been no reported injuries or damage to nearby homes. "The fire is under control, will update as more info becomes available", the New York Police Department tweeted. Follow @fdny, @NYPD114pct and @conedison'.

While many thought it was the same light, that emanates from a UFO hence time for an alien invasion, others believed it was time for a divine intervention, Judgment Day perhaps?

Con Edison blamed the massive flash on a "brief electrical fire" at one of its substation in Astoria, just 5 miles northeast of the Empire State Building.

Airport: LaGuardia Airport briefly lost power after the explosion, too.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said crews were working to fully restore power "as soon as possible", but he did not offer a timeline.

"Arriving flights are able to land, but some departures are being held up".

Residents reported temporary power outages.

Closer to the power plant, Peter Dipietrantonio said he and his girlfriend heard a bang and then saw a "green aura" fill his window. 'So bright I couldn't look directly at it'.

Smoke arose from the source of the blue light, visible from as far as Manhattan. The light was blue because of the nitrogen and oxygen in the air when the electricity arced through it, he added.
