  • Heavy snowfall could mar end-of-2018 travel as a winter storm moves across the country in coming days

Heavy snow and rainstorms moving through much of the United States are predicted to create unsafe road conditions for millions of travelers heading out after Christmas.

That snow will continue through the day Thursday.

On the low end, the weather service stated Cass, Crow Wing and Aitkin counties could receive 7-8 inches of snow.

Right now it looks like this storm will just skirt by the Denver area with 0-3 inches potentially falling.

Strong northeasterly winds with gusts to 60 kilometres per hour.

A quick and potentially heavy burst of snow will drop a couple to a few inches of snow on metro area roads Wednesday evening and overnight, which is what prompted the Winter Weather Advisory.

Rain and snow broke out across the central and southern Plains on Wednesday and ramped up Wednesday night in the Upper Midwest. The heaviest snowfall is expected along and west of the Red River Valley, where blizzard conditions are expected Thursday.

The section of the storm that was prompting a blizzard warning covered the eastern half of each of the Dakotas as of Thursday morning, as well as parts of Kansas and Nebraska.

The Twin Cities is in a winter weather advisory. However, the weather service is forecasting little if any ice accumulation. Reduced visibility due to blowing snow is likely Thursday into early Friday morning.

Severe weather, including damaging winds and an isolated tornado, is also possible on Thursday from Alabama to Louisiana to Mississippi.

Kalin says poor travel conditions are expected. According to KOTA TV meteorologist Eric Gardner, the worst of the storm in the east will occur Wednesday night into Friday morning.
