Post-holiday, partial government shutdown to gain impact

  • ‘I am all alone’, tweets US president Donald Trump on Christmas; Netizens can’t stop trolling him

The shutdown didn't stop people from visiting the White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico, where hundreds of unauthorized visitors have in recent days climbed over a fence to enter the monument, according to The Alamogordo Daily News.

Even with both chambers of Congress and the White House under Republican control for the past two years, former real estate developer Trump has not gained full funding for his wall.

He claimed that 115 miles of wall was set to be constructed in Texas, and that he would visit the border at the end of January for a groundbreaking ceremony.

Trump also insisted Tuesday that the wall - through renovations and new contracts - is actually already scheduled to be built and refurbished.

Trump then appeared to remember what day it was, and finished his short press conference by saying: 'But other than that I wish everybody a very merry Christmas'.

The partial shutdown of the US government entered its fifth day Wednesday, with no public indication a resolution is imminent.

While the White House was talking to congressional Democrats - and staff talks continued on Capitol Hill - negotiations dragged Wednesday, dimming hopes for a swift breakthrough.

Trump chimed in from the White House, where he has relentlessly tweeted on a variety of issues while cooped up in the mansion since Saturday, when the shutdown began. "(Not until) we have a wall, a fence, whatever they'd like to call it", Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, noting that "much of it is 30 feet high".

"I mean border security is great, but basically, that feels like extortion when he is holding our jobs hostage for this shutdown", said Raekwon Snyder, a government contractor for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who lives in Baltimore, Maryland, with his girlfriend and their 8-month-old son. If the shutdown continues into 2019, she has vowed that her new Democratic majority will act quickly to pass legislation reopening the government.

Trump excused federal employees from work on Monday and Christmas is a federal holiday, meaning the public could begin to notice the shutdown's effects on Wednesday.

The shutdown started Saturday after funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies.

I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security. "But it's all the same thing", he said of Democrats' preference to give him federal monies for border "fencing" rather than the concrete and steel wall on which he campaigned so hard in 2016.

Some 800,000 federal workers must either work without pay for the time being, or stay home and wait to be paid later.

He promised to keep fighting for wall funding.
