Verbal volleys between rival captains Tim Paine and Virat Kohli caught the attention of players and fans during the Australia-India second Test in Perth.

With the series delicately poised at 1-1 heading into the flagship tests in Melbourne and Sydney, Australian vice-captain and seamer Josh Hazlewood wasn't about to query Kohli's antics. It's great because of this guy...

But with the bigger picture of a series win at the forefront of his thoughts, Kohli said he wasn't searching his mind for something to "talk about" with his opponents. "We're definitely working on that aspect, to stay in that zone and keep playing good quality cricket and be competitive on all days of the Test match".

Shastri revealed that Jadeja's injury had also ruled him out at Perth Stadium, where India went with a four-prong pace attack and duly slumped to a 146-run loss that levelled the four-test series 1-1.

Australia are without premier batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner and given that the first two Tests were played on bowler- friendly pitches, the Indians should have called the shots.

He was upbeat about India's prospects, despite losing the second Test.

"We were filming in a studio at Adelaide Oval the day before the Test when the national anthems blared out on the loudspeakers, as part of rehearsals for the following day, forcing us to take a break". The left armer was reportedly carrying a slight niggle in the shoulder even before the series kicked off but was declared match fit ahead of the all important encounter. So when you look at Perth, he was around 70-80 % fit and we didn't want to take that risk.

Numerous excuses were given by Kohli and Shastri.

"Would he have been better off going through proper rehab instead of taking injections and bowling in the nets and then fielding for a considerable period of time as a substitute not just in the infield but also in the deep, from where he has to get long throws in?"

The Indian board can't overlook the squandered opportunities and simply allow Kohli and Shastri to remain bombastic in front of the media even as opponents walk away with the winners' trophy.

On India making three changes for the Boxing Day Test with Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja replacing openers Murali Vijay, KL Rahul and pacer Umesh Yadav, Paine said he is not bothered. He was perfectly fit when he was with us. I think it's important to leave it there and focus on the next Test match. It's something that I work on the mindset.

"Now to be out in the middle going head-to-head with him in a Test series is something I'm really relishing". So the boys know what they can do and what they are capable of.
