Former Nasa engineer makes glitter bomb to prank thieves

The police at the time told him there wasn't much they could do about it, he said.

After checking out the security cameras at his home, he found out that indeed a couple had walked by one afternoon and just stolen the package mid-day.

If there's one video to watch right now, it's former NASA engineer and current Apple engineer Mark Rober's incredible "glitter bomb" trap, built to fight Amazon package thieves. When he brought the video to the police, they said it wasn't worth their time to investigate it, so he chose to take matters into his own hands.

It shows how Rober connected four phones to a GPS-connected circuit board inside an Apple box.

So he spent the next six months building a custom-made "glitter bomb" hidden inside of a decoy package.

The box is complete with a return address for Kevin McCallister, the Home Alone boy played by Macaulay Culkin who left a series of traps to thwart would be burgles, Harry and Marv.

The box contained a Global Positioning System locator and accelerometer that triggered the phones to start recording when the box was moved, and when opened, released the glitter along with an automatic can of "fart spray". Once removed from a home by a would-be thief, the geo-tracking would alert Rober while also triggering the phones to begin recording and uploading footage to the cloud.

Soon after the package was kept in the doorway, it was stolen by a thief who took it and ran away with it in his auto to a nearby parking lot.

Rober's viral YouTube video, posted Monday, covers the development of his clever boxes of whoop-ass, but the best part is watching them detonate on real suspects.

Moral of the story: Don't steal other people's packages!
