  • IPL Auction 2019 Five overseas players who could become millionaires

Varun Chakravarathy was bought by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping Rs 8.4 crore.

The 20-year-old is on the fringes of the England ODI team and an outsider to make his country's World Cup squad, so could feature in the whole of the 2019 IPL, which is due to start in late March.

They will join nine fellow New Zealanders in next year's competition with Williamson, Colin de Grandhomme (Royal Challengers), Tim Southee (Royal Challengers), Ish Sodhi (Rajasthan Royals), Trent Boult (Delhi Capitals), Colin Munro (Delhi Capitals), Mitchell McClenaghan (Mumbai Indians), Adam Milne (Mumbai Indians) and Mitchell Santner (Super Kings) all retained by their franchises.

In the IPL auction that happened at Jaipur today, one of the highest bid players came across as a surprise since not many people are aware of the young bowler from Tamil Nadu.

This story will be added to throughout the day.

West Indies players were in demand with Royal Challengers Bangalore paying 42 million Indian rupees for Hetmyer.

KXIP, who had the maximum money going into the auction, also spent big on England all-rounder Sam Curran, buying him for Rs 7.2 crore, the most for an overseas player on Tuesday.

Mumbai Indians bought back Sri Lankan veteran Lasith Malinga for Rs 2 crore while veteran Ishant Sharma was bought for Rs 1.10 crore by Delhi Capitals.

The 20-year-old attracted the third-highest bid of 72m rupees, having entered with a base price of 20m.

Another discarded India pacer Mohit Sharma went for Rs 5 crore to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while current pace spearheads Mohammed Shami's services were purchased for Rs 4.80 crore by Kings XI Punjab.

Franchises love a good mystery spinner (even if it doesn't necessarily guarantee success like KC Cariappa or Shivil Kaushik) but Varun, given his trial with Mumbai Indians for starters, was likely to have an IPL contract by the end of Tuesday.

His teammate Brathwaite, the star of 2016 World T20, was sold to KKR for Rs 5 crore after a bidding war between the Dinesh Karthik-led side and Kings XI Punjab. "I thought I would be bought at my base price", Varun told PTI.

Patel, who made his name at KXIP, was bought by Delhi Capitals after a bidding battle with the Punjab franchise.

But the West Indian Hetmeyer will be the cynosure and like all franchises, KXIP will also go all-guns-blazing to get the wily U-19 WC victor from 2014.

India batsman Hanuma Vihari went at four times his base price for INR 2 Crore to Delhi Capitals.

Brendon McCullum, who launched the IPL with a 158 over a decade ago, went unsold.
