United and PSG set for Champions League showdown

  • Champions League draw

Liverpool have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the Last 16 of the Champions League.

Defending champions, Real Madrid will have a seemingly easy contest against Eredivisie side, Ajax Amsterdam.

Lyon coach Bruno Genesio says his team can draw on their group-stage displays against City - a 2-1 away win and 2-2 home draw - ahead of their clash with five-time European champions Barca.

It will be a 50/50 chance when Mauricio Pochettino's side, Tottenham play against surprise Group A winners, Borussia Dortmund.

Around the same time, United have a daunting face-off with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, with some fans positively cringing at the prospect of a defence likely to include Phil Jones and Chris Smalling having to stand up to Edinson Cavani, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe.

The first leg will be at home on Wednesday 13 February.

Of course, Klopp's background means he is well acquainted with Bayern and he offered his thoughts on the tie to Liverpoolfc.com immediately after the draw.

Spanish football pundit and former Real Madrid player and manager Jorge Valdano said: 'Juventus are not happy either.

When will the last-16 ties be played?

Olmpique Lyonnais will square up against Spanish champions FC Barcelona.

It is, though, the first time the Red Devils will have played the French side, who are unbeaten in their own domestic division this season with some 44 points from 16 league games.

Liverpool are now fifth favourites to go one step further than past year - when they reached the Final in Kiev to be ultimately defeated by Real Madrid - and go on to lift the most prestigious trophy in club football for the sixth time.

Manchester City and Schalke have played each other only once, City winning 2-0 in the Europa League back in 2008.

UEFA announce that the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in the round of 16.

The Premier League quartet now know the task they face in the UEFA Champions League last 16 after the draw threw up some exciting fixtures.

The Europe elite competition has now got to its interesting stage as no team will have the luxury of depending on other results to qualify. It will be an historic tie between two teams who have helped make the competition what it is'. Schalke is in 13th place in the Bundesliga.
