Google CEO reveals why Trump pops up in 'Idiot'

  • US President Donald Trump

Explaining that results from such a search led to pictures of U.S. President Donald Trump, Democratic congresswoman Zoe Lofgren asked: "Right now, if you google the word "idiot" under images, a picture of Donald Trump comes up".

Bitcoin was also a popular query in many other countries across the world.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai - and other tech executives who may be watching - got hints Tuesday of what issues they can expect to face as Democrats take control of the House in three weeks.

Pichai offered a long, general explanation the way Google returns results, saying the search algorithm was based on billions of keywords that were ranked according to 200 factors.

Pichai was called to the House Judiciary Committee following a series of attacks by President Donald Trump and his supporters claiming that Google and other internet platforms were suppressing conservative voices, despite persistent denials from the companies.

"I know Google's attitude".

It is likely that Google will come under increased pressure in the coming months and years to reorient its commitments, especially as US-China tensions intensify. That piece featured a leaked transcript that seemed to suggest that Google was close to launching the search engine.

According to Google Trends, "idiot" is now the number one most searched for term in the US. "But if it's not free speech, why do they get a free pass on protection against libel, for example?" he asked, urging Americans to view the questions and answers from the hearing.

Pichai explained, "We provide search today for any time you type in a keyword".

Although Lieu's study is not scientific, the company maintains that "search is not used to set a political agenda, and we don't bias our results toward any political ideology".

Google said the list, which includes top searches, news, people, and beauty questions, is "based on search terms that had the highest spike this year as compared to the previous year".

Many conservatives have maintained that they believe that Google tampers with its search engines although Google has shot the theory down.

Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, told Pichai that he had to scroll deep into search results to find any positive articles about President Donald Trump's signature tax cuts a year ago.

Momentum is building in Congress for legislation to put stricter limits and privacy protections around the big tech companies' collection of data.
