An Arizona company is expanding the scope of its recall of raw beef that could be contaminated with salmonella, federal officials said Tuesday. A total of 246 people have became sick in 26 states. The agency fears more contaminated beef may be stored in Americans' freezers.

Those at most risk for severe illness include people with weakened immune systems, babies and elderly individuals.

Most people recover within four to seven days without ever receiving treatment.

The same outbreak forced the company to recall over 6.9 million pounds of similar beef products in October. "267" stamped inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Affected products have the establishment number "EST". Not all who eat infected meat will get sick, but they can pass the infection on to others. The affected products include Kroger, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Comnor Perfect Choice, Grass Run Farms Natural Beef, Showcase, Showcase/Walmart, Gourmet Burger, and JBS Generic.

The following products are subject to recall: Products List (PDF); Product Labels (PDF only).

Consumption of food contaminated with salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses, the USDA said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the products from JBS Tolleson, Inc.

In addition to throwing away any meat covered by the recall, health officials say always cook raw meat to a safe internal temperature -160° F for ground beef.

When JBS launched its initial recall on October 4 on the USDA's website, there were 54 people in 12 states who had been confirmed with infections from Salmonella Newport, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's outbreak announcement, which was also posted on October 4.

Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact the JBS USA Consumer hotline at 800-727-2333.
