The New York City Police Department is asking for your help in identifying a couple after a proposal turns into a nightmare in Times Square.

He was so excited when she said yes he promptly dropped the ring down a grate underfoot. They left without filing a police report or providing their contact information.

All was not lost - police found the ring at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The New York Police Department confirmed on Sunday that it had found the hapless duo.

They asked for help, but police were initially unsuccessful at getting the ring out.

On Twitter and Facebook Sunday, the NYPD issued an all-hands bulletin.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill urged twitter to "do its thing" and reunite the couple with their ring.

Arrangements have been made to return the rescued ring to the pair in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, and the NYPD tweeted a photo of the smiling couple holding a celebratory drink to toast the unlikely outcome.

"Wasn't a Twitter user, I am and will be forever grateful to all who have helped me get my ring back!"

"We would like to thank everyone who shared this story!" the NYPD News social channel tweeted.

They're now liasing with the police to get the ring back.

It wasn't such a "grate" proposal, but there's a happy ending.

Anthony said yes, but the ring was too big for her finger.

In extremely unlucky circumstances, the ring slipped off Daniella's finger as they were walking over a subway grate in Times Square later that night.
