  • Theresa May wants meeting with Saudi prince to call for 'transparent' probe into killing of Jamal Khashoggi

Trump has dismissed a Central Intelligence Agency assessment that Saudi's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, likely ordered Khashoggi's murder.

The Saudi government has given contradictory explanations for the death and denied that Prince Mohammed knew of it. There were also warm handshakes for the crown prince from President Trump and his daughter Ivanka on the first day of a summit where some had hoped he would be treated as a pariah.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Putin clasped each other's hands and smiled widely as they greeted each other Friday.

"What I said to the crown prince yesterday was the importance of a full, credible, transparent investigation that identifies those who were involved and the importance of ensuring that those who were involved are held to account".

The US president cancelled a formal sit-down with Mr Putin at the summit in Argentina over Moscow's seizure of Ukrainian vessels.

"They exchanged pleasantries at the leaders' session as he did with almost every leader in attendance", the White House official said on Friday.

Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe and his wife Akie arrive at Ministro Pistarini International Airport.

The Saudi royal sent the messages to Saud al-Qahtani, who is thought to have supervised the 15-man team that killed Khashoggi.

Despite initial pleasantries, the crown prince looked sidelined during the official "family photo" of world leaders and other dignitaries, standing at the far edge of the group portrait and ignored.
