US President Donald Trump has been given a personal explanation of events that led to him meeting Scott Morrison as Australia's Prime Minister - not the man he has been used to meeting at the White House, in NY and at world summits for the last two years.

Earlier Saturday, the White House confirmed that the president had some face time with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday night, after canceling a more formal meeting ahead of the summit.

The two superpowers have been fighting a trade war, which is threatening to hurt the global economy as billions of dollars of tariffs have been slapped on products.

The G20 nations account for 85 percent of the world's economic output and two thirds of its population.

Following the USMCA signing, and once Argentina's President Mauricio Macri has opened the first of the summit's two days, a mass protest is planned for central Buenos Aires Friday afternoon.

Trump has already imposed tariffs on more than $250 billion in Chinese goods - about half of the total imported into the United States each year - in an attempt to pressure Beijing to change its trade rules.

President Donald Trump on November 30 lauded "good signs" ahead of talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on resolving their trade war.

"We can't resolve problems such as the future of work or climate change issues on our own", said Mr Macri. Trump Friday expressed optimism about a deal.

"I think they want to, and I think we´d like to". "I think I understood you better in your language than I did on this, but that's OK", Trump told Macri and then dropped his earpiece on the floor.

On the US side, these include advisers such as Larry Kudlow and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who are widely seen as wanting to cut a deal, but also hawkish advisers like Peter Navarro and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

The state-run China Daily said that the Pacific powers could strike a deal in Buenos Aires but warned the United States against pushing too hard on technology. "Way, way, way above my pay grade", he said.

Speaking to the press at the G20 Summit of world leaders, May praised the Brexit deal, saying that for the first time in more than four decades the United Kingdom would have an independent trade policy, playing an active role on the global stage.

USA officials have insisted that the USA economy is more resilient to the tumult than China's, but they remain anxious of the economic effects of a prolonged showdown - as Trump has made economic growth the benchmark by which he wants his administration judged.

He reminded the leaders how 10 years ago, the G-20 came together in a spirit of dialogue to prevent a worsening of the global financial crisis.

Trump cited Russia's seizure of the ships as the reason he canceled a planned bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where they had been expected to discuss the US leader's threat to withdraw from the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty.

That "really puts a damper on it, to be honest", Trump said.

On the trade war front, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said on Tuesday trade talks between the USA and China have been heating up ahead of the summit.

Vladimir Putin has confirmed he spoke with Donald Trump during dinner at the G20 summit.

The Saudi leader has been the subject of widespread condemnation after Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed during a visit to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey in October.

But Human Rights Watch accuses him of responsibility and also of war crimes in Yemen, and on Wednesday, Argentine legal authorities took initial action to consider a request to prosecute him for alleged crimes against humanity.

Prince Mohamed told Mr Macron not to worry, but the French president countered: "I am anxious".

Saudi Arabia has insisted the prince had no prior knowledge of the killing.
