Kremlin Says Putin, Trump Will Meet on Sidelines of G-20

  • Captured Ukrainian navy sailors are conveyed to Kiev district court of Simferopol Crimea

He told Germany's Bild newspaper he hoped the ships could be relocated "to assist Ukraine and provide security".

Poland and Estonia expressed support for further sanctions.

Now, after flip-flopping repeatedly over a planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump is steering clear of that as well.

Moscow branded Kiev's stunt in the Kerch Strait as a unsafe provocation, while the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation called for a de-escalation of tensions, while Kiev declared a 30-day martial law.

Poroshenko told Bild he also wanted North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to deploy warships to the Sea of Azov. On Monday, he told reporters "we don't like what's happening either way", but on Tuesday, in an interview with the Washington Post, he suggested that he might cancel the Putin meeting over the crisis.

"We can not accept this aggressive policy of Russian Federation".

Ukraine says Russian Federation is deliberately blockading Mariupol and another Ukrainian port on the Sea of Azov, Berdyansk. "The Ukrainian side has asked us to act wisely".

He said the bloc would continue to provide "political and practical support" to Ukraine, which is a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partner country.

"If you look at the recent reconnaissance operations from Souda Bay (Greece), the Americans are now flying manned reconnaissance flights from Souda Bay to the Black Sea and this is really one of their spearheaded battlefield management platforms RC-135, a platform that I worked on in the 80s".

Mr Lavrov said Ukrainian warships had ignored maritime law on Sunday when they tried to enter the Kerch Strait, aiming to create a scandal for domestic political purposes.

During the encounter, Russian ships blocked, rammed, and eventually opened fire on a group of Ukrainian ships that were attempting to sail into the Sea of Azov, where two of Ukraine's major ports are located.

A Crimean court is due to order the detention of nine of the 24 captured Ukrainian sailors - including senior Ukrainian naval officers and at least one member of Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency.

Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said canceling the meeting was the wrong move. Recent polls suggest that only about 10% of the electorate plans to vote for him next year, with and almost 50% saying they would not vote for him under any circumstances, the Kyiv Post newspaper reported.

The Kremlin has warned Ukraine's declaration of martial law in regions that border Russian Federation could re-ignite the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

'A vicious practice of returning to illegal, unilateral sanctions and protectionist measures is spreading, going around the UN Charter, the rules of the WTO and internationally recognized legal norms, ' Putin said.

Ukraine's border service said it would only allow Ukrainian citizens to travel to Crimea via its land border with the annexed territory, while the head of the Ukrainian navy said Kiev would try to get Turkey to close the Bosporus Strait to Russian ships.

What other reaction has there been?

This runs counter to the Ukrainian government's allegations.
