  • Violence erupts as Copa Libertadores final postponed due to bus ambush

The decisive second leg of the Copa Libertadores final has been called off after fans of River Plate attacked the Boca Juniors team coach and injured players as they made their way to El Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires.

Reports said Boca's Pablo Perez and Gonzalo Lamardo had been taken by ambulance to hospital, the former with slivers of broken glass in his eyes and the latter a cut on his head.

"The players are all hurt, you can't play this way", Christian Gribaudo, Boca's secretary general said in quotes reported by the Clarin website.

Pepper spray and tear gas were reportedly deployed as the Boca players were caught in the middle of the action.

Boca Juniors, who've been training ahead of the 2nd leg of the Copa Libertadores final with their cross-town rivals River Plate, in a match that has been branded "Superclasico".

For three and a half long hours representatives from River, Boca and CONMEBOL clashed heads over what to do next: the clubs wanted to abandon the final, with the governing body pushing for the game to be played.

Tevez said they were being "obliged" to do so despite "being in no condition" while the midfielder Fernando Gago blamed the presidents of Conmebol and Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Videos emerging in the immediate aftermath outlined the destruction that had been brought upon the Boca bus, and the vulnerability of the players on-board as a result.

The continental cup final between Argentinian archrivals Boca Juniors and River Plate has been postponed following the violent attack on Boca's team bus before the match.

Boca eventually agreed to play, but kick-off was delayed by two and three-quarter hours and it was clear they were playing under protest.

At time of writing - a little after 9pm - the match still hasn't kicked off due to wild scenes at River Plate's Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

"We were very surprised", he said.

Carlos Tevez beleived that his teammates were in no condition to play. It completely surprised me. I had an allergic reaction and there were players who could not breathe. "It's not the best way to prepare a game".

Trouble continued with thousands of River fans breaking through security, so many without tickets were able to force their way into the stadium.

Predictably, there has been plenty of reaction to the madness in Argentina on Twitter, with ex-players, fans and pundits alike giving their opinion.
