U.S. mid-term elections 2018: Americans vote in 'poll of a lifetime'

Republicans control the House and the Senate as well as the presidency, giving them total law-making power in Washington DC.

The Trump administration now holds power in all branches of government - the presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court - and if Democrats were to take back the House, they could put a pin in much of Trump's agenda. He added: "The Democrat agenda is a socialist nightmare".

"They've had two years to find out what it's like to have an unhinged person in the White House", said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, who leads the Democratic Governors Association. Pre-elections surveys point to a split verdict, with Democrats winning back the House of Representatives winning seats from more populous urban areas and Republicans managing to hang on to the Senate retaining seats from less populated hinterland, although given the shock results in 2016, no one is putting any money on the forecast. Those voters have increasingly fled Mr Trump's Republican Party, turned off by his chaotic leadership style and xenophobic rhetoric.

Some Democrats have already vowed to force the release of his tax returns.

The re-election bids of Republicans Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida and Fred Upton of MI both moved from "Likely Republican" to "Lean Republican".

Hoover oversaw a more than 40% stock-market wipeout in the year following the 1930 midterm election while the decline after Taft's 1910 midterm election was a more manageable 5.5%. Democrats expect to flip the 1st District, and the 3rd District with Rep. David Young is a toss-up.

Democrats are drawing strength from women and college-educated voters, who swung decidedly against Trump since his election. And among white men without college degrees, Republicans led 65% to 30%. Instead of blanket attacks on Trump, Democrats can focus on individual members' records. Should Abrams win, she would become the first African-American woman to be a governor of a U.S. state.

Americans are going to the polls to vote on all 435 seats in the House, 35 of the 100 Senate seats and dozens of state governors. "We need to elect politicians who believe in it and will do something about it".

"It's going to be a long night for America's voters and a busy night for us", says OneNewsNow editor-in-chief Jody Brown.

Limbaugh said voters are "awakened" by issues such as the made-up attacks on Kavanaugh and the caravan from Honduras heading for the US with the intention of breaking into the USA illegally. The demographic shifts also reflect each party's closing argument. Although the President doesn't run for office in the midterm elections, he himself has warned that the vote is a sort of a "referendum" on his presidency and on his GOP supporters.

The president spoke to reporters on the airport tarmac here alongside Donnelly's opponent, Republican Mike Braun, ensuring he would get his picture on TV and in the papers.

"This is our source of strength", O'Rourke said as he cast his ballot in El Paso. "Health care for millions of people. Get out and VOTE for Peter!", Trump wrote. There are nearly two dozen House races to watch in this hour across more than a dozen states. Aided by Republican retirements and an unprecedented flood of donations, majority from women, they appear to be almost guaranteed to gain at least somewhere in the mid-to-high teens. Ahead of the vote, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi confidently predicted last week that Democrats would indeed win back the House.

"You know, Trump could have put out his own version of "Morning in America" ads and tried to ride the economy to the midterms, but I think Trump realized he's not on the ballot, even though he is".

Trump has faced threats of impeachment over his conduct in relation to the FBI investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump doesn't think much of that poll.
