One of Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh's accusers admitted this week that she made up her lurid tale of a backseat auto rape, saying it "was a tactic" to try to derail the judge's confirmation to the Supreme Court.

Avenatti also was referred for promoting to the committee another woman who accused Kavanaugh accuser of gang rape. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) forwarded a letter from a "Jane Doe" to Committee investigators, claiming that Kavanaugh and a friend had raped her "several times each" in the "backseat of a vehicle".

Grassley asked for federal authorities to investigate her on allegations of making false statements and obstruction.

The Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee completely exonerated Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of "numerous allegations" of misconduct, including an accusation of attempted rape, exposure, and instances of heavy drinking in a 414-page report issued Saturday.

The story began on September 25 when staffers for Sen, Kamala Harris referred an anonymous letter to the committee which had been mailed to Harris' office.

Munro-Leighton contacted the committee in October claiming she wrote an anonymous letter accusing the judge of sexual misconduct.

When they finally spoke with her Thursday, she claimed she wasn't Jane Doe - but had heard about the letter and claimed to be Jane Doe so it would get more attention. "But I am deathly afraid of revealing any information about myself or my family".

It's not clear from reports where the woman resides in Kentucky. According to their findings, they deduced that she was what they described as a "left-wing activist", who is "decades older than Judge Kavanaugh". The committee questioned Kavanaugh on the allegation and read him the letter during the course of the investigation, Grassley writes.

"No, no, no. I did that as a way to grab attention", Munro-Leighton said to investigators. "I am not Jane Doe". I saw it online. She told investigators that her claim was a "ploy" to "get attention". Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) referred those involved for criminal investigation.

"In short, during the Committee's time-sensitive investigation of allegations against Judge Kavanaugh, Ms. Munro-Leighton submitted a fabricated allegation, which diverted Committee resources".

"Such acts are not only unfair; they are potentially illegal", Grassley added. "Indeed, the evidence appears to support the position that Julie Swetnick and Mr. Avenatti criminally conspired to make materially false statements to the Committee and obstruct the Committee's investigation".
