Bodies of two sisters found taped together on NY river bank

  • Police have identified the two women whose duct-taped bodies were found washed up from the Hudson River as sisters

It said the sisters were students "accompanying their brother in Washington".

Meanwhile, both the NYPD and an official at the Saudi Embassy in Washington DC refuted an Associated Press (AP) claim the mother of the two sisters had said that she received a call from the Saudi Embassy requesting the family to leave the U.S. because the daughters had requested asylum. They were reported missing in August. "Meet them? See them?"

New York Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said they were particularly interested in finding out what happened since they were reported missing and what led them to New York.

According to an Arab News report cited by the NYT, the younger of the two sisters had been living with their mother in Fairfax, while the older one had been living in NY.

"We are looking at all clues in their past life", Shea said on Tuesday.

NY and Arab media said the sisters, who had run away from home before, were of Saudi origin but their family was living in Fairfax, Virginia.

Investigators have said they did not see any obvious signs of trauma on the bodies when they were found on October 24 in the area of 68th Street and Riverside Park. Rotana Farea had been enrolled at George Mason University until the spring.

The consulate said it has "appointed an attorney to follow the case closely", and that authorities "are following closely and constantly for details on the case including the forensic reports showing the causes of death which have not yet been finalized and is still under investigation".

They said there was no reason to think the sister was abducted or in danger, which is why no images were released to the public. The young women's bodies were being held by the NY medical examiner pending an autopsy.

Two sisters whose bodies were found bound together were Saudi nationals who may have been seeking asylum in the US. The lack of obvious trauma appeared to rule out a theory they jumped into the river from the George Washington Bridge.

The Week's Ryan Cooper likened the Farea sisters' death to the 1976 car-bombing and assassination of Chilean dissident Orlando Letelier-an assassination which was carried out with the full knowledge and tacit acceptance of top USA policymakers, including then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, according to the Washington Post.

New York City police sent a detective to Virginia to learn more about the sisters.

The Saudi embassy in Washington declined to comment on the reports.
