  • This tropical disturbance will likely become the next named storm in the Atlantic

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Oscar was centered Monday morning about 590 miles (955 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda, with top sustained winds of about 85 mph (140 kph).

The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Oscar was expected to continue in a westerly direction overnight, followed by a turn towards the west-northwest by early Monday, with a northwestward motion forecast on Monday afternoon. Oscar is expected to become a powerful extratropical low over the north-central Atlantic by late Wednesday.

"Environmental conditions appear conducive for further development and this system will likely become a tropical or subtropical cyclone later today or tonight while it moves generally northward over the central Atlantic".

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 miles per hour (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Oscar is still moving toward the west at 16 miles per hour.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean usually starts from the month of June and lasts till November 30.
