Why the Obsession with the Migrant Caravan, Mr. President? - Hit & Run

  • Pentagon to send 'several hundred' troops to US-Mexico border, says official

At the caravan's regular evening meeting in the town square, its coordinators tried to force a little chivalry. I wish I could just tell them - and I say it, caravan, turn around. "Women carrying children or pushing strollers are at a disadvantage", according to NBC News.

A local nun scolded the men for their actions.

"Even if it's a short-term deployment, it's another step toward militarization of our border", Isacson said, adding that 40 percent of people being apprehended at the border were children and families.

"We are from the same country", said Harlin Sandoval, who was waiting with several hundred others on the highway outside Pijijiapan, hoping to hitch a ride from passing trucks.

Rosa Bonilla, who is a single mother traveling with an nearly 2-year-old and a 10-year-old disagreed that men shouldn't be allowed on the vehicles.

Asked whether the administration was seeking to ban certain people from entering the country or sealing the southern border completely, Nielsen said "everything is on the table". They will not be allowed to stay.

"If you look at how we organize for the storms, from Puerto Rico, where you surround the storms, for Texas, for Florida, we surround the storm ... so right now, we're planning it, how we are going to do it".

More than a hundred Central American migrants have forced their way through a customs gate at the Guatemalan border town of Tecun Uman to request passage into Mexico.

However, the Mexican government said that it calculated the number of people at about 3,600. Many members have been travelling for more than two weeks.

However, it now appears such smaller groups will be picked off by immigration authorities, keeping them from swelling the caravan's ranks.

The Mexican government seems to be in limbo, trying to decide whether or not they should help the caravan's travelers press on or stop them from heading towards the United States. Rojas transported the group to their destination after spotting them on a highway trudging through temperatures approaching 40°C (104°F).

A large migrant caravan, headed to the USA, makes its way Thursday through the main square of Pijijiapan, Chiapas state, Mexico. The trip could be twice as long if the 4,000 or so migrants head for the Tijuana-San Diego frontier, as another caravan did earlier this year.

There's a possibility some members will split off and try to make their own way to the US-Mexico border.

The International Organisation for Migration claimed more than 7,000 people had joined the group as of 22 October.

According to NBC News, "The Trump administration is drafting an executive action that would make it exceedingly hard for Central Americans seeking asylum to gain entry at the U.S. -Mexico border, according to three sources familiar with the proposed measures".

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said that migrants wishing to obtain temporary identification documents, jobs or education for their children could do so by registering for asylum in southern Mexico.

The ministry said the permits will allow the Central American migrants to have access to paid employment and medical attention in the south and southeastern area of Mexico.
