  • Opener Fakhar Zaman plays a shot during the final of the T20 tri-series at Harare Sports Club

It was a clinical effort from the bowlers, in particular Imad Wasim, who on his return to global cricket after more than a year rattled the Australian top-order to return figures of 3/20 in his four-over spell.

Faheem Ashraf knocked back Glenn Maxwell's middle stump and Ben McDermott was run out by a direct throw from Fakhar two balls later that left Australia 16-4 in the fourth over.

Ashton Agar and Nathan Coulter-Nile eased the pain of an embarrassing thrashing, partnering for 38 runs in seven overs before Pakistan cleaned up the tail-end.

Set a target of 156 after Aaron Finch elected to field in Abu Dhabi, Australia were bowled out in 16.5 overs for their equal third-lowest total in a T20 worldwide.

Only twice have Australia scored fewer runs in a T20 global, making just 79 against England at Southampton in 2005 and 86 in a defeat by India at Dhaka four years ago. A target of 196 was always going to be daunting for Pakistan and they lost their first wicket in the opening over of the chase to make matters worse. However, they were blown away in a dramatic opening six overs after which they found themselves six wickets down.

Finch said the defeat was embarrasing.

"Obviously we were just outplayed".

"Absolutely they'll be looking at changes", Finch said.

Australia, who beat Pakistan in the group match of the tri-series, need to win 3-0 if they want to jump from their current third position to the top.

Billy Stanlake (3-21) and Andrew Tye (3-24) struck in quick succession, but Hasan Ali (17 not out) smashed two fours and a six in Coulter-Nile's last over which lifted the Pakistan total.

Set 156 to win after Pakistan posted 8/155 from its 20 overs, led by Babar Azam's 68 not out and 39 from Mohammad Hafeez, Australia was never in the hunt. Part-time spinner D'Arcy Short had Hafeez top-edging to long-on and Asif Ali was caught plumb leg before wicket by legspinner Adam Zampa.

In the end, Australia got all out for 89 as the host secured a dominant victory showing cricket fans around the world exactly why this ruthless side are the top team in the world.

Finch stated that the team would need to make serious amendments to their batting technique before the second T20 global at Dubai on Friday.
